It's peak season for installing sod! Here are 5 FAQ's on fall planting:

Q: How late in the season can you install sod?
A: If the ground isnt frozen and we can harvest, you can install. Historically we harvest till Thanksgiving 🍂

Q: What are the watering requirements for new sod this time of year?
A: Changing temps can make it hard to know how much water your new sod needs, but a good rule of thumb is to heavily soak your sod after install, then keep an eye on the sod and make sure it's staying moist between waterings. Around 1-2 times per day should be plenty for the next couple weeks, and even less as temps drop below the 60's.

Q: Does the new sod need fertilizer?
A: Applying starter fertilizer before install is always recommended to help speed up rooting and reduce transplant shock. Sustane 4-6-4 is our go to 👌

Q: What if my water is turned off for the season and it hasn't rained for awhile?
A: Because sod goes dormant in the winter it needs much less water. However, if temps are above average and the grass is looking dry, a quick hand watering may be necessary.

Q: Which is better for sod, spring or fall?
A: Either season is an excellent time to install sod. Both take less water compared to summer and both are more forgiving in terms of transplant shock. The main benefit to installing in fall is the grass continues to root through the winter, giving it more time to establish before next summer ☀️

Excellent application of BioMeadow® at Wheeler Historic Farm last week. Unfamiliar with Fine fescue turfgrass? See below!

- Fine fescue is a Low-Maintenence, cool season turfgrass known for it's thin, soft, hair-like blades.

- It is often referred to as a "No-Mow" type lawn, meaning it can be left long and cutting is reduced to a couple times per season (usually late spring and fall).

- It loves shade! These grasses are perfect
under tree canopys with little sun or high elevations like Summit County. 🌳 🏡

- Drought tolerant. Fine fescue roots pe*****te deep into the soil profile where more water is available. 💧

- Great for steep hillsides where mowing is difficult due to it's "No-Mow" growing habit.

Check out this beautiful park strip renovation featuring Crushed Cobble, Blonde Boulders, and low water plants!

Pro tips for flipping your strip this summer:

- Always use commercial grade w**d barrier with woven polypropylene fabric. Dewitt Pro 5 is our favorite. Water passes through it without letting w**ds in.

- Remove at least 4-6" of soil from your park strip. More depth = less maintenance in the long run. Dust collects between rocks and over time grow w**ds!

- Take the time to swap your sprinklers to drip. Sure it's more work compared to capping them but the native plants thrive in these hot areas 🌼 🌸, the honey bees will love you 🐝, and its so much prettier!

- Wash your rock with a hose before install. Decorative rock is delivered unwashed and coated with dust that eventually ends up in your park strip giving w**d seeds the chance to germinate. This extra step keeps your beds as clean as possible and reduces future w**ds!
