The Fall crocus (Colchicum) are popping up out of the ground and reminding us that we are now transitioning from one season to the next. It is amazing how quickly it happens. The nights are definitely getting cooler. Before long, the leaves will be changing. The thought of a hearty stew is becoming quite appealing. Each season has its place and it is important take time an be present in these special moments.

Have you tasted an Asian Pear? It's like mixing the texture of an apple with the flavor of a ripe pear and then doubling down on the juice. They are crunchy, sweet, extra juicy and very refreshing on a hot summer day. This variety is 20th Century.

This little apple is Frostbite. Don’t let its size fool you. It has a big personality. Packed with flavor, it makes for an excellent snacking apple. It has a nice crisp texture and is quite sweet. It is perfect for eating out of hand at the end of August and into September here in Western Mass.

An interesting bit of genetic history… Frostbite is a grandparent of Honeycrisp!

Did you know apples have over 50,000 genes? That is more than twice the number in the human genome!

To preserve this special apple, like all other exceptional apple varieties that are cherished, it must be propagated through grafting. For thousands of years grafting has been utilized to preserve select apple varieties.

You might ask yourself, “why not just plant the seeds to make a copy?” Keep in mind the genetic diversity of apples. Just like every child is different from their parents, apples work the same way, but with many more genes, their seeds outcomes are highly randomized. This is why many people will say, “don’t plant an apple seed, because the chance that you will get something good is vary rare.” But here’s the thing, if you don’t plant apple seeds, you’ll never discover new spectacular apple varieties. We need both propagation techniques. Grafting to preserve and planting seeds to discover.

If you would like to learn how to graft, be sure to keep an eye out for our grafting program in the Spring. We’ll announce in through our newsletter.

This is Contender peach - perfectly ripe mid August. The variety is a freestone peach. Because the pit does not hold tight to the flesh, processing is so easy. The taste is everything you would expect from a perfectly sun-ripened peach. So juicy! The hard part is holding back on eating them all before putting some up for the winter.

New York Ironweed likes moist ground and can get very tall when growing in ideal conditions. The good news: when growing on drier sites, its max height may be limited, but the plant still produces an abundance of purple flowers. This is especially helpful when trying to capture photos of the native bee population.

If you are observant, plants can help remind you when important tasks need to be accomplished.

In this case, we are looking at Tiger Lily and associating it with the task of summer pruning. Tiger Lilies have dramatic flowers that grab your attention as well as the attention of many pollinators. Because they bloom at the end of Summer, they can act as a visual reminder to think about summer pruning fruit trees.

Over the next few weeks, there will be a few good windows of rain free days. We will take advantage of that good weather and get some much-needed work done in the orchard.
