Hutton’s summer internship program gives students the chance at learning real-life opportunities for more than architecture and construction. This year, one of our summer interns has been learning alongside our people operations team to gain HR experience. Today, Kalin Rowley gave a presentation to Hutton team members about Generation Z—her generation.

In her presentation, she shared research about the misconceptions of Gen Z, how Gen Z tends to function in a work environment, and how her generation defines success. This was not just a fantastic public speaking opportunity for Kalin, but it was a great learning opportunity for everyone to better understand the next generation of team members.

The Rockwell Branch of the Wichita Public Library was built in 1976, and they recently decided to move forward with an exciting new transformation. They broke ground last week to celebrate the public funding and the generosity of many supporters. With that funding, Hutton Design+Build has designed and will build an addition and renovation to expand the library.

The exterior will feature new parking stalls, a drive-thru for easy drop-off and pick-up and improved courtyard access. Inside, we designed expanded sections for all ages, five new study rooms and a private space for families. The renovation also doubles the size of the meeting space and enhances the staff work area. Stay tuned for these exciting upgrades, including new flooring, paint, furniture and technology enhancements!

The Kearny County Hospital project was unique, because much of the renovation happened while the emergency department was still in use. To keep staff and patients safe, our team built barrier walls and used a negative air pressure system to keep harmful debris away from patients.

Our team’s fourth project with the hospital since 2007, the final renovation was completed earlier this year in Lakin, KS by our Western Kansas office. This renovation included new patient rooms in the in-patient wing and revamped wall layouts and finishes. Take a look at these photos of the new space!

Earlier this week, The Salvation Army South Central Kansas cut the ribbon on a new space in their South Central Area Command location in Downtown Wichita, KS. This new space offers transitional housing for those suffering from addiction and for Wichita’s homeless population. It serves as a place for those in need to find opportunities for employment, recovery, mental health services and more.

Designed by Alloy Architecture, this project is just the beginning of an exciting push for the Salvation Army to provide life-changing services to more people. We were honored to construct this renovation and we can’t wait to work alongside their team on future projects to continue making a difference in our community.

The Salina Airport Authority cut the ribbon on their newly renovated Hangar H626, built by Hutton Design+Build. Special guest Senator Jerry Moran gave his remarks at the celebration as well, recognizing the rich history of Kansas aviation. Many in the community gathered to help unveil the hangar.

We’ll be sharing photos soon of the new space, so stay tuned. There’s lots to say about this space, like the fresh look and an innovative fire suppression system on the cutting edge of airport safety. All of this makes up an exciting development for the Salina community and the Kansas aerospace community at large.

Hutton Energy Services recently completed an installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels at Geary County Schools USD 475’s Morris Hill Elementary School in Fort Riley, KS, to offset the energy used by the school.

PV solar panels produce electricity by capturing the sun’s energy with solar cells. These cells then transfer the energy from the sun through a complex wiring system. As it passes through diodes and builds up voltage, it is then sent to an inverter which converts the voltage into usable electricity.

USD 475 will immediately begin to see the benefits of this installation, as these solar panels are anticipated to offset approximately 20% of the school’s annual electrical usage.

Last week, our Salina team members who have been working at Fort Riley on several construction projects attended the monthly Garrison Awards Ceremony. Here, Hutton, Kolde Concrete Construction and the Directorate of Public Works - Fort Riley were honored to receive recognition for our excellent concrete work, installing more than 21,000 SF of concrete sidewalks and more than 1,600 LF of curbs and gutters.

This project exemplifies the strong partnership between Hutton, Kolde, the Directorate of Public Works - Fort Riley, Geary County Schools USD 475 and the United States Army. Congratulations team!

After a couple years of trying to keep up with quick fixes and remodels of their existing Augusta dealership, Don Hattan Dealerships decided it was time for an upgrade. A complete renovation and addition, designed and built by Hutton Design+Build.

Collaborating with the staff at the dealership, our team designed a comfortable space around the needs of the team and their clients. Brightening the lighting, efficient windows, a new interior color palette—all to modernize the space. Additionally, our team designed a service center and bay for Hattan Ford to better support their customers.

Construction just began and we’re already so excited for the big reveal. Stay tuned to see how it turns out! For now, check out this rendering of what the new space will look like.

Last week, Hutton Design+Build interns visited multiple jobsites across Kansas. From Faith Academy in Wichita all the way to the new Docking building in Topeka, our interns were able to see different stages of the construction process in person.

While they were here, they learned from Hutton professionals about what it takes to manage these projects from start to finish. Our interns spend countless hours on jobsites absorbing knowledge, and learning from our talented construction experts is an important part of the Hutton intern experience.

We talk about it a lot—how the needs of Hutton clients drive our commitment to innovation. That’s why we offer so much more than architecture and construction. Read the article from Wichita Business Journal below to learn about how this investment in client needs has led to some exciting new developments for us.

But those aren’t our only new developments! Hutton’s headquarters have been in Wichita’s Delano District since 2020, and we can't imagine going anywhere else. In fact, we’re planting our roots even deeper by expanding our Wichita headquarters westward across the street. Our business support team will serve our people and projects throughout Kansas and beyond from the new location.

The company also now has a chief of staff, while its business office functions are poised to move to another part of Hutton's growing Delano District campus.

In collaboration with Jones Gillam Renz Architects, Hutton Design+Build completed the construction for the Salina Art Center renovation of the north building. Included in this renovation is a custom welcome desk, new retail and office spaces, a commercial kitchen and some maintenance and mechanical updates.

On the exterior, the Salina Art Center is now instantly identifiable with their new sign, art feature and exterior renovations. They just debuted the new look — we encourage community members to see the updates for yourself, as well as the beautiful art inside.

On all Hutton projects, finishing strong is as important as any other point in the Design+Build process. For the Humlicek Family Dental project, our team had one of our last client meetings with the owners to make sure the final stages of construction are on schedule. Our designers walked them through the space, allowing them to make some final design decisions as well.

Over the course of these projects, Hutton architects and builders develop relationships with owners to ensure transparency and to deliver the facility our clients have been dreaming of for so long. We can’t wait for you to see the new Humlicek dental office when we cut the ribbon in only a few months.

Yesterday, Hutton held a potluck for our interns after a long day of learning from our Design+Build professionals. It was a great opportunity for them to bond with our team members over hot dogs, hamburgers and homemade cookies. While these summer internships are a great way for students to gain experience, they’re also a way to create lifelong memories and friendships over the summer.

Meritrust Credit Union has a long history of serving the Wichita community—one that began nearly 90 years ago. To honor that history and bring some life to their headquarters, Meritrust called on the Hutton Design+Build team to create a history wall in the central lobby of their Wichita headquarters. We also designed a bookshelf and board member wall for their executive floor.

Did you know that Hutton Facility Services does more than just warranty work on all Hutton-built projects? While it’s true our facilities team completes warranty work on all our projects, we do preventative maintenance on many facilities too. And this leads to a question we often get asked: “What’s the difference between preventative maintenance and warranty work?”

Think of it like a car warranty—you may be covered driving off the lot, so anything unexpected that happens would typically be covered by the warranty. But the responsibility for preventative maintenance usually relies on the owner to complete—think oil changes or new tires. We do the same thing, but with buildings! We get hired to do routine maintenance, like replacing filters or inspecting systems so your facilities will last even longer.

This summer, Hutton’s interns are scattered throughout Kansas, earning real-world experience. Meet four of our 21 talented summer interns: Rece Wilson - Kansas State University (Construction Science), Jaidyn Hess - Oklahoma State University (Design), Gabe Hartwell - Kansas State University (Construction Science and Management), and Kalin Rowley - Kansas State University (Human Development).

For the summer, Rece will be in Wichita helping our team finish an interior project with a big client. Jaidyn will spend the summer learning from our talented designers and architects, both in the office and on jobsites. Right now, she’s helping with a mosaic tile design on an interior design project. Gabe is at Wilbur Middle School helping our team with upgrades for Wichita Public Schools. And Kalin is with our people operations team, helping lead intern events and on-boarding new team members.

This summer is looking very bright, as are the futures of each of these lifelong learners, and we’re happy they chose to spend their summer with us.

Trenton Agri Products is an ethanol producer in Trenton, NE who converts corn into biofuel, distillers grains and corn oil. Our industrial team has spent portions of the winter and spring in Trenton at their biorefinery building a concrete foundation for their new 535,000-gallon fermenter 5 addition as well as installing new containment for their wet distillers grain storage.

This plant operates 24/7, distilling grain and corn oil into around 53 million gallons of renewable fuel each year. Now, after more than 20 years in business, Hutton is helping them to bolster that processing capacity. The updates should be finished in the next few months.

The Equity Bank Tower has been looking over east Wichita since it was built in 1973. After working with the team to update some of the interior floors of the tower and their other bank branches for the past few years, it was time for an exterior facelift.

“Through our collaboration with Hutton, we’ve completely transformed the appearance of our building at the intersection of Kellogg and Rock Road—one of the most well-traveled crossroads in Kansas,” said Brad Elliott, Equity Bank CEO. “Our design reflects the vision and creativity that resonates with Wichita’s dynamic energy and pays homage to entrepreneurial companies like Equity and Hutton, while capturing the rising spirit of our city.”

And capture that spirit, we did. Hutton Design+Build handled the architecture and construction responsibilities of this upgrade, which included a top visor and a geometrical corner piece on the northeast facade—all highlighted with lighting features for enhanced visibility. It was designed to match the existing brand aesthetic of other Equity Bank branches. In addition to these upgrades, a few floors were also updated, and the entire building was repainted with updates to the entrance façade rounding out the project.

Last week, Hutton Design+Build team members visited Washington D.C. for the national The American Institute of Architects conference. But we didn’t visit for just the conference, we were there to accept OUR FIRST NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD.

The Youngmeyer Field Station is a Wichita State University research facility in the Flint Hills of Kansas, designed and built by Hutton. It is a net-zero, entirely off-grid research facility and state-of-the-art lab and living quarters. The design for Youngmeyer harmoniously blends with the natural tallgrass prairie landscape. The project team was led by 2021 AIA Kansas Young Architect of the Year award winner Emily Taylor. Congratulations to Emily and the entire Design+Build team!

This award is Hutton's first national AIA architecture award and only the fifth awarded to a Kansas project in AIA’s 167-year history. Read more about the project at the link in the comments, because this is a project worth celebrating.

Yesterday, we joined Don Hattan Dealerships to break ground at their Augusta, KS dealership. There, Hutton designed and is building a 16,000 SF expansion and remodel of their current space and adding a service center to better support their customers.

This year marks the 75th year of Don Hattan, so this groundbreaking serves as an important moment in the dealership's already rich history. Congratulations, Don Hattan team—let's get to work!

Earlier this month, SculptureTour Salina held an “Unwrap Party” all around Salina, KS. This event unwrapped more than 20 sculptures, sprinkling some art throughout the city. As a sponsor of this event, Hutton unwrapped this piece by New York artist Glenn Zweygardt called “Oval Keeper.”

It’s a privilege to be invested in the art community, whether through utilizing local artists in spaces we design, or engaging in art throughout the city along with SculptureTour Salina.

When the City of Lindsborg Government asked us to design and build a remodel of their public safety building, we knew exactly how to take this space to the next level. Hutton carried out a complete interior rework of their police and volunteer fire department offices, updating their conference room, interview room, evidence room, training room and officer lockers/showers. The exterior of the original 1980s building also received a face lift to modernize the facade and highlight Lindsborg's unique heritage.

But what’s a safety building without new safety features? In addition to the functional and aesthetic upgrades, the remodel prioritized safety by adding electronic door controls, modern recording technology and a safety vestibule equipped with bullet-resistant glass.

Yesterday, Hutton Design+Build summer interns spent the day in Augusta, KS, helping the community rebuild the castle park for The Castle Park Project. The chance to earn construction experience while revitalizing this town staple is a unique opportunity for our interns to grow and give back this summer.

The work done by construction professionals can certainly be physically demanding, but the mental health of people in construction is an equally important aspect of safety that can often be overlooked. Which is why earlier this month, Hutton Safety Director Jorge De La Torre signed an agreement on behalf of Hutton to join the first-of-its-kind Mental Health & Safety Alliance through AGC of Kansas.

In partnership with U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, the Mental Health Association, and the Kansas Department of Labor (Industrial Safety and Health Division), this alliance was established to foster safety and health practices to improve American workplaces. Hutton’s collaboration with this alliance will extend access to training resources and best practices to all Hutton team members.

Last week, Hutton hosted a field management training meeting for all our field leaders. These are semi-annual meetings for project managers, superintendents, project engineers and other team leaders to gather for a day of leadership training. In this session, our team heard from Dan Oblinger about navigating difficult conversations to equip these leaders on being better negotiators with the people they lead.

Also covered in this day-long workshop were presentations on safety, QA/QC, warranty issues and a subcontractor panel. Hutton regularly invests in the personal development of each team member. Often, that investment starts at the top and these training meetings help us partner with our leaders to cultivate an attitude of lifelong learning for everyone.

One of Hutton’s guiding principles is to give each Hutton team member the tools to pursue learning in a way that improves their work and their life. In her role, Roxanne McFarland has many responsibilities requiring her to collaborate with various city officials and departments. Her curiosity about that process led her to enroll in the City of Wichita- Government's Civic Engagement Academy—a hands-on discovery program for citizens to explore civic engagement and general city operations for the purpose of improving overall quality-of-life conditions.

After eight sessions, she graduated from this class, earning a Certificate of Civic Leadership through the City of Wichita and the Kansas Leadership Center. Congratulations Roxanne!
