🍁 FALL IS FOR PLANTING 🍁

It is not uncommon for people to believe that they should be planting shrubs and trees when they are in full leaf or bloom — after all, who can resist a beautiful Japanese Maple when it is displaying its colorful purple leaves in spring, or a flowering Cherry when it is covered with clusters of pink or white flowers?

It comes as a shock, therefore, when they learn that mid to late spring is not the best time to plant, especially larger trees! During the fall months of October and November, trees enter their dormancy stage (the leaves change color and they start to go to sleep for the winter), and subsequently, the shock of transplanting is greatly reduced. The success rate of planting trees when they are dormant is probably three times greater than doing it in spring.

This time of year, the leaves on Crape Myrtles, Birches, Maples, Oaks, etc. are changing from green to beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow and soon will begin to drop. But don’t be deterred by nature’s way of protecting a tree. This is a good signal for taking advantage of the natural growing cycle and planting a tree in your garden.
