That's a wrap on BASA 2026! It was a privilege to join educational leaders from across Ohio at the recent Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA) conference. A big thank you to everyone who stopped by the table and connected with the team, asked questions, and participated in the learning session. These events allow us to better support the evolving needs in education and support the work our schools do for Ohio’s students.

At the conference, TDA Principal Ryan Schmit delivered a learning session alongside the superintendent of Auburn Career Center, Dr. Joe Glavan, and explored the details of building resilient capital improvement planning (CIP) teams. The discussion centered on key roles, core responsibilities, and how school districts can assemble the strongest teams to successfully navigate long-term facility goals.

Robust planning directly impacts the student experience, transforming everyday spaces into environments where learning can thrive. Thank you to everyone who connected with our team and attended the session!

Across Ohio, the vast majority of school superintendents and business managers have an average tenure of 3-5 years in their districts. This shift in leadership, coupled with staff turnover, hiring new team members, and gauging your community's perspective on spending, necessitates that every school district build a nimble team with many perspectives to accomplish district-wide capital projects.

There are proven strategies to assemble a long-lasting team that spans disciplines and avoids pitfalls, ensuring you have the right skills represented to protect your district from risk, select the correct consultants, ensure compliance, and financial planning to make either large or small projects a success.

Join the superintendent of Auburn Career Center, Dr. Joe Glavan, and TDA Principal Ryan Schmit at the Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA) conference to discuss the nuances of building your team, the key roles and responsibilities, and a good capital improvement plan.

As of this summer, major milestones have been achieved for Phase 1 of the construction of the new Brunswick High School. The Brunswick community passed a bond issue in early 2023 and also secured co-funding of $42.6 million from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) to build the 301,740 SF campus. Construction commenced in May 2025 after the traditional groundbreaking ceremony hosted by the Brunswick City Schools.

Construction proceeds on schedule in preparation for the coming winter, when significant interior progress will be made. TDA is proud to partner with Hammond Construction, operating as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMR).

Substantial completion of the new Brunswick High School is scheduled for May 28, 2027. Students will begin attending in the fall for the 2027-2028 school year.

Before the transition into fall, TDA staff members enjoyed the last summer series activities of the season. June started with attending an evening Cleveland Guardians game. Then, in July, friends and family participated in a kayaking excursion, and in August, was a visit to The Holden Arboretum.

Part of having a "people first" culture includes providing experiences for socializing among employees. During the summer, we organize multiple opportunities to participate in fun activities that promote connection and collaboration.

On a beautiful blue sky day, TDA spouses, friends, and kids launched from the livery at Crooked River Adventures in Burton to enjoy a relaxing six-mile trip down the Cuyahoga River.

A breathtaking trip to the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland provided scenic trails among the wildlife, blooming foliage, and tree canopies. Some of the attractions include butterfly, rhododendron, and wildflower gardens, and refreshing walks alongside lakes and meadows.

The summer activity series inspires an appreciation for natural beauty and regional attractions, while also supporting local businesses and parks. It is just one way the firm expresses gratitude for the people who have chosen TDA to be their career home.

On August 11, 2026, Chardon Local Schools opened the Rohr Tennis Center, marking a step forward for the district's athletic programs. This six-court facility gives student-athletes a state-of-the-art home for tennis.

The $1.39 million project was made possible through an anonymous $1.2 million private donation and covers the cost of construction for the six regulation-sized courts, while the district provided funding for an adjacent dedicated 31-space parking lot.

The site features a ten-foot security fence, stormwater management system, and controlled access to keep play safe. Having these courts at this location eliminates the need for off-site travel, giving student-athletes direct access to high-caliber practice spaces during and after school hours. The professional surface quality ensures the proper ball bounce and player traction, allowing students to focus on skill development, sportsmanship, and Hilltopper spirit.

TDA is proud to partner with Chardon Local Schools on this athletics improvement project.

Oberlin City Schools showed four sixth graders an animation of the new 6-8 middle school to capture their spontaneous reactions to the new educational spaces. The students expressed their excitement and appreciation for the design of the new middle school currently under construction.

Hazel, Alyssa, Jayla, and Kaira shared their spontaneous thoughts about exterior and interior details, including comments about the colors, textures, patterns, lighting, and classroom configurations.

The 8-minute animation revealed design-accurate spaces, starting with a complete fly-around of the entire exterior, including the main entrance and bus drop-off, parent drop-off, and staff parking lot before entering the school through the main entrance secure vestibule. Once inside, the students visited the main office, media center, gymnasium, collaborative spaces, various classrooms, and student dining.

TDA is proud to partner with Hammond Construction, operating as the Construction Manager-at-Risk. The new 6-8 middle school is scheduled to open for the 2027-2028 school year.

As our proud partnership with Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity on their 100 Homes & Beyond Campaign continues, construction progresses on Home 100 in Eastlake. An empty plot of fallow ground during the groundbreaking ceremony in April now has the frame of the house with a shingled roof.

Habitat’s 100 Homes & Beyond Campaign in Lake and Geauga Counties is designed to provide a home to families who would not otherwise have the opportunity for homeownership. TDA is donating our architectural and communications services for the 100th home project. This collaboration aligns with our core values to support our local communities, including educational and civic partners, by empowering them through design.

The Wall Raising event in May at the Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity ReStore parking lot (34225 Vine Street in Eastlake) hosted over 100 volunteers from the community who assembled the wall frames that would be installed on site after the foundation and flooring were prepared. In July, volunteer groups from Cleveland Construction, Inc., Cleveland Clinic, Avery Dennison, and other residents installed the walls to complete the framing of the entire house.

Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity Construction Manager Roger Wilt is a retired contractor with years of experience building hospitals who enjoys working with project volunteers. "It’s really rewarding to work with people from all walks of life," he said. "They get a real kick out of volunteering. I've worked on jobs where you pay people $50 an hour, and I couldn't get this kind of work out of them. And they're doing it for free."

"The project is going so well, and so smoothly, it's almost scary," he said.

Alongside ThenDesign Architecture, many local businesses are contributing their time, expertise, and resources to make such an affordable residential living space possible. Lake-Geauga County Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Help Build Hope, 4 Seasons Construction & Roofing, Firenza Stone, Powers Roofing & Exteriors, Polaris Engineering & Surveying, Inc., N.E.O. Electrical Supply and Lighting Center, Blue Collar Electricians, Active Plumbing Supply, Precision Overhead Garage Door of Cleveland, and Cabinetworks Group, all of which are generously contributing to make the project a success.

Riverside Local Schools celebrated the start of construction for the new two-story, 12-classroom and gymnasium additions at Buckeye Elementary School. The long-term goal of the district was to have three larger-scale elementary schools that provided modern learning spaces, equitable environments, and enhanced opportunities for students and staff.

The existing building will also undergo a significant renovation to bring it up to current educational standards. The project will consolidate kindergarten through fourth-grade students into a single facility and was funded through a loan paid for by the district's Permanent Improvement Fund with no additional cost to taxpayers.

"I want to thank our entire staff for their support in our continued mission of making the Riverside Local School District a great place to live, learn, and work," said Superintendent Dr. Christopher Rateno. "Thank you for your unwavering support of the Riverside Local Schools as we all strive to be one community, pursuing greatness, and getting better every day."

TDA is proud to partner with Cleveland Construction, Inc., serving as construction manager-at-risk. The project will be completed for the start of the 27-28 school year.

The Geauga County Courthouse has stood as a prestigious landmark at the edge of Chardon Square for over 150 years. The once-in-a-lifetime expansion and renovation project has been completed and was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony, commemoration, and community tour.

The $20.4 million renovation and expansion project encompassed approximately 21,500 SF of the 1870 courthouse, with the addition of approximately 30,800 SF of new space. Implementing purposeful design elements, modern security features, and advanced acoustic and technology components, the expanded three-story Geauga County Courthouse provides a fresh, safe, and secure environment for judges, jurors, staff, and visitors.

Geauga County Board of County Commissioners Jim Dvorak, Ralph Spidalieri, and Carolyn Brakey were joined by Geauga County Clerk of Courts Sheila Bevington, Prosecutor Jim Flaiz, Retired Judge David Ondrey, Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Paschke, Common Pleas Judge Matthew Rambo, and Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand. The ribbon was cut to officially open the new courthouse.

Partnering with Infinity Construction & Demolition, Inc., the design and construction teams took great strides to accommodate the needs of the judges, courthouse staff, city, and county throughout the project. While being sensitive to the community's concerns, everyone involved understood the local significance of the building and made it a personal goal to show the utmost care in approaching the project with due respect and integrity.

It was a privilege for us to be the architect on this once-in-a-lifetime project.
