1)Never mix metals

I beg you to start mixing metals! It can be intimidating at first but if you stick to 2-3 complementary finishes (like oil rubbed bronze and brass) it adds a beautiful amount of intentional contrast in the small details.

2)Every surface needs decor

Negative space is a design element, so leave some breathing room around your visual anchors. You want your eyes to rest, not be overwhelmed by the clutter

3)Pushing your furniture against the walls makes a room feel larger

This actually does quite the opposite, it’s best to have your furniture floating to create a conversation space. Even 3-6 inches is enough to create architectural depth & shadows

4)Faux plants look cheap

as with anything in life…you get what you pay for. Do your research (or ask me for my rec’s 😊) because affordable and realistic faux plants are out there!! I promise!

5)Mirrors on the wall make a space feel larger

This is only true if what you are actually reflecting, what’s opposite of the mirror wall, is something beautiful (like artwork, a window or a a styled shelf). Please for the love of all that is green on this earth do not reflect a messy closet, be intentional about what is going to be reflected.

Proportions & visual weight is what can keep a space from feeling just right & these are the top culprits I see almost EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. (!!!!)

- Rugs that are too small
- Sideboards/TV stands that are not proportional to the TV
- Visual weight of furniture not playing with eachother (i.e a “leggy” piece with a “leggy” piece…you need to balance out the negative space with more grounded, chunkier pieces
- Artwork that is too small
- Trees and plants that are teeny tiny in relation to the furniture and room, i. e ceiling height

Get the scale right, and the whole room falls into place!

Great design is SOOO much more than a beautiful space, its about designing with intention from the beginning!

So here are my 5 design secrets you can steal to create a beautiful and cohesive home! 🙌

1. Craft a cohesive design story.
This is where you select the common threads that are carried throughout your space - mood, color, materials

2. Understand scale and proportions.
Scale is how piece fit within the room, proportion is how piece relate to each other.

3. Designing with function in mind.
This gets overlooked and is SO SO SO important. A space needs to work for you, making your day to day life seamless.

4. Establish a focal point.
Every room needs an anchor, this si where your eyes will land when walking into a space.

5.Create contrast.
A room without contrast is flat, so mix opposites together i.e. sleek and textured, light and dark, glossy and matte.
