🚨 Did you know? Two concrete driveways can look identical on Day 1… but perform completely differently 10 years later.
The difference isn’t what you see on the surface…
It’s what’s INSIDE the concrete.
When we pour concrete, one of the biggest decisions is whether to use fiber reinforcement, steel reinforcement (rebar/wire mesh), or both.
🧵 Fiber Reinforcement
Think of fiber like thousands of tiny strands mixed throughout the concrete. Their job is to reduce shrinkage cracking and improve durability as the concrete cures.
✅ Helps control small cracks
✅ Increases durability
✅ Great for sidewalks, patios, pool decks, and many residential driveways
🔩 Steel Reinforcement (Rebar or Wire Mesh)
Steel does a completely different job. It gives concrete the tensile strength needed to resist bending, heavy loads, and ground movement.
✅ Adds structural strength
✅ Helps keep concrete together if it cracks
✅ Ideal for foundations, retaining walls, garage slabs, heavy-duty driveways, and structural concrete
💥 Here’s what many contractors won’t tell you…
Fiber is NOT a replacement for rebar where rebar is required.
Fiber helps control cracking.
Steel provides structural strength.
They solve two different problems.
⭐ Our Recommendation
For many residential flatwork projects, fiber is an excellent upgrade.
For structural or heavy-load applications, steel reinforcement is essential.
And when the budget allows, combining fiber with steel often provides the strongest, most durable concrete slab possible.
At TLT Contracting, we don’t believe in “good enough.” We build concrete the way we’d want it installed at our own homes—using the right reinforcement for the job, not the cheapest option.
If you’re planning a new driveway, patio, sidewalk, or concrete project, let us show you how to build it to last.
