Northern Bush Honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera) — fresh from under the snow.

Bottlebrush Grass (Elymus hystrix) and Silky Wild Rye (Elymus villosus) are starting to actively grow.
These are cool-season native grasses, meaning they begin growing early in spring while temperatures are still low, taking advantage of sunlight before the tree canopy fully leafs out.
Both species are excellent choices for dry, shady woodland areas, where many other plants struggle. Their early growth provides structure, helps stabilize soil, and supports woodland ecosystems.
As the season progresses, they develop graceful seed heads—bottlebrush grass with its distinctive bristly spikes, and silky wild rye with its soft, arching form—adding movement and texture to the shade garden.
