Shamballa, a newly opened 8-hectare research site in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is exploring what sustainable living could look like when architecture, agriculture, and technology are designed as a single system.

Developed by WASP and Olfattiva, the site includes “Itaca,” a certified 3D-printed self-sufficient farm, alongside automated gardens, rainwater harvesting systems, and bio-construction research facilities. For architects, the project offers an interesting case study in how 3D printing can move beyond prototyping toward replicable, resource-conscious building models.

Sharjah Architecture Triennial 2026 continues its research focus with *A Journey into Architecture Archives*, exploring records from Baghdad, Damascus, and Tunis. Curated by George Arbid, the exhibition highlights how drawings, models, and films shape architectural memory. For architects, it’s a reminder that archives don’t just preserve history—they inform future practice.

Across Europe, contemporary homes are reinterpreting local architecture rather than replacing it. Highlighted through Dezeen Awards, these projects draw from regional forms, materials, and context—adapting them for modern living. For architects, it’s a reminder that innovation often comes from working within local identity, not against it.

International Mother Earth Day is a reminder that the built environment is inseparable from natural systems. As biodiversity loss accelerates through land-use change and resource extraction, architects play a role in shaping more balanced outcomes. Designing with ecological awareness—materials, site impact, and long-term performance—can support a more responsible relationship between development and the planet.

Drywall waste doesn’t have to end up in landfill. Closed-loop programs now allow clean gypsum board offcuts to be returned and remanufactured into new panels—without compromising performance. For architects and builders, this supports cost savings, reduces waste, and helps meet evolving sustainability targets like LEED requirements.

Learn how materials can stay in the loop 👉 https://www.constructioncanada.net/exclusive-commemorating-earth-day/

Construction Canada spoke with a representative of a gypsum board manufacturer on how drywall scrap can be efficiently recycled into new board without performance loss, delivering cost-savings, and sustainability benefits.

Modern Mexican homes reflect a layered architectural lineage—where modernism meets history, landscape, and climate. Emerging after the Mexican Revolution, architects reinterpreted European ideas through local materials, colour, and form. The result is a distinct approach that blends geometry with texture and place—showing how modern design can evolve through cultural context.

Discover how modernism adapts to place 👉 https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20260416-eight-of-mexicos-most-stunning-modern-homes

From a sculptural icon by an early modernist master to a remote, rosy-hued dream home, here are some remarkable Mexican dwellings.

The new LACMA gallery by Peter Zumthor raises a critical question for the profession: how do we balance ambition with impact? Its elevated, spanning form required extensive steel and concrete—far beyond typical benchmarks—highlighting the carbon cost of large-scale design moves. For architects, it’s a reminder that structural expression carries environmental consequences.

Read more on design and carbon trade-offs 👉 https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2026/apr/16/lacma-david-geffen-galleries-peter-zumthor-eiffel-concrete-aircraft-carrier

Built on tar swamps and two tortuous decades in the making, Lacma’s latest addition used twice as much metal as the Eiffel Tower. How did America supersize revered architect Peter Zumthor?

The ground floor renewal at the Gardiner Museum is shaped by accessibility, connectivity, and Indigeneity. Improved circulation and sightlines create a more open, flexible experience, while a new gallery centres Indigenous ceramic traditions. It’s a reminder that spatial design can support both movement and cultural recognition.

Storm damage isn’t an exception in commercial roofing—it’s a design condition. As extreme weather intensifies across North America, flat roof systems are continually tested by wind, rain, and freeze–thaw cycles. For architects, the focus shifts from prevention to resilience: material selection, detailing, fastening, and coordination all matter. Storms don’t just cause failures—they reveal design assumptions.

Learn how to design for durability 👉 https://www.constructioncanada.net/commercial-roofing-storm-resilience-lessons-from-installers-working-in-harsh-climates/

Preventing storms themselves is impossible, but roofs can be designed and installed to better withstand their impact.

ETFE is reshaping stadium design. Originally developed by DuPont for aerospace, its lightweight structure, durability, and high light transmission make it ideal for large-span roofs. Widely used in contemporary venues, ETFE opens new possibilities for performance and form—prompting questions about how existing landmarks like Soldier Field might be reimagined.

See how materials are driving new design thinking 👉 https://www.archpaper.com/2026/04/etfe-stadium-architecture-soldier-field/

ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) has emerged over the past two decades as one of the most transformative materials in stadium architecture.
