Content 8: Rainbow Mountain: Location and History

Where Is It?
Vincentura—its Quechua name, though most visitors know it as Rainbow Mountain or Montaña de Siete Colores ("Mountain of Seven Colors")—sits at an altitude of 5,036 meters (16,522 ft) above sea level in the Cusco Region of the Andes. More precisely, it's located in the Canchis province, in the department of Cusco, near the Ausangate glacier, and is part of the Vilcanota mountain range. It's roughly 100 km (about 3 hours by road) southeast of Cusco city, in the district of Pitumarca.

The Geological History
Formation began millions of years ago. Sources vary in their exact dating—some place the mineral-rich sedimentary layers as far back as 24 million years during the Andean orogeny (the mountain-building process that created the Andes), while others date the deposition to the Cretaceous period, roughly 75 to 63 million years ago. What's agreed on is that sandstone, halite, gravel, and limestone were laid down in layers, and later chemical transformation through mineral sulfation altered their pigmentation.
Each color has a distinct mineral origin. Pink comes from red clay, mudstone, and sand; whitish stripes from quartz sandstone; browns and purples from limonite and marl; red from iron mixed with clay; green from phyllite and clay; and mustard yellow from calcareous sandstone.
