Little Gough
A space that was once a dark, unconditioned garage has been transformed into a cosy study and reading nook filled with natural light.

The original barn-style garage doors were replaced with a seat-level window, opening the room towards the street and creating a new connection with the activity beyond.

A small intervention that completely changes the way this part of the house is experienced.

Swipe left to see the before.

Little Gough
Some of the most important spaces in a home are the ones you barely notice. Behind this wall of joinery, the laundry and powder room are concealed within a compact service pod.

The walnut wall continues through the kitchen, dining area, and semi-private study nook, creating a continuous element that effortlessly brings together several spaces within the home.

Little Gough explores how much can be achieved through a restrained material palette.

The new addition is clothed in stack bond terracotta brick, subtly distinguishing it from the old building’s more traditional stretcher bond orange clinkers.

Horizontal concrete bands reference the commercial architecture across the laneway, while the combination of brick and concrete gives the new addition a sense of permanence and connection to the history of the neighbourhood.

Understated yet solid.

Little Gough occupies a small triangular corner site where two very different environments meet.

On one side is a quiet residential neighbourhood. On the other are larger commercial buildings that form a distinctly different backdrop to the site.

This meeting point became an opportunity to create a transition between the two. The design draws from the scale, proportions and architectural language of both settings, creating a home that feels connected to its residential surroundings while acknowledging the more industrial character beyond.

Introducing Little Gough, a project we photographed earlier this year and are finally getting around to sharing.

Located at the edge of a residential pocket beside the iconic Nylex silos, the project gives a 1990s orange clinker brick home an upgraded lease on life through a carefully considered double-storey addition.

The new addition sits respectfully behind the original dwelling, allowing the existing house to retain its quiet presence while establishing a new relationship with the surrounding streetscape.
