One of the best parts of welcoming fall? Cold mornings, cooler nights, and a little more time spent getting cozy.

At Ravine Reimagined, this primary suite was designed to feel like a retreat within a retreat. Soft textures, warm neutrals, and expansive windows framing the changing landscape create a space that feels just as inviting as the views beyond.

And as the leaves begin to fall, the views of Lake Michigan open up a little more each day. One more reason to linger a little longer.

Sometimes the best renovation isn’t about starting over. It’s about reorganizing what’s there and deciding what deserves to stay.

For this two-story vintage penthouse renovation and addition, we reshuffled the plan to create better flow, stronger connections between rooms, and spaces that worked for the way our clients lived. Original architectural details were preserved and paired with new millwork, warm woods, stone, metal, and quieter contemporary elements.

The goal was never to make the old look new. It was to let old and new belong together, creating a home that feels collected, personal, and timeless.

Consider another way.

With wood floors this beautiful, we wanted to give even the floor registers a little extra attention.

For this custom home, we skipped the traditional stained wood registers in favor of a cleaner, more contemporary solution.

We selected sleek metal registers, set flush with the flooring and custom powder-coated to match. The result is a subtle, integrated detail that feels like part of the architecture rather than an afterthought.

Rather than drawing attention to the registers, this approach lets the beautiful wood flooring take center stage.

A little extra coordination with Apex Wood Floors and wujcik_construction_group made all the difference.

Save this detail for your next renovation or new build.

Every detail is considered long before it’s built.

A wall section may look like lines on a page, but each one represents a decision: how materials meet, how a window sits within the wall, how a ceiling aligns, how an entry is sheltered, and ultimately, how the architecture will feel.

The drawings are where those details are worked through. The finished home is where they come to life.

Every drawing, every line is part of turning an idea into an experience.

A chance encounter on a city sidewalk nearly three decades ago turned into our very first commission: a new house on a double lot in Lincoln Park.

This summer, those same clients called us. They still love their home and don’t want to leave it, so they asked us to explore adding an elevator to help them age in place.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about knowing a home we designed decades ago is still so loved.

And it’s a reminder of how we’ve grown as designers. Today, we advocate for aging-in-place strategies from the beginning, no matter how young our clients are, designing homes not just for today, but for what comes next.

Planning a home for the long term? Let’s start the conversation.

Proof that adjacency matters. Especially when the wellness studio is next to a kid’s bedroom. 😂

It’s all in the reveal.

A small gap. A lot of impact.

Here, the reveal creates rhythm across the millwork, carrying continuously through the closet and bath and tying the two spaces together.

Proof that sometimes the smallest details do the most work.

It starts with a view and a window.

At Jaffe Architecture, we think about what you’ll see, how you’ll move through a space, and how the architecture can connect you to what’s beyond it. At Ravine Reimagined, that meant carefully positioning each window to frame the landscape and make the ravine and lake part of the experience of the home.

From construction to completion, these nearly identical views show the architecture coming to life, with and helping turn what we envisioned on paper into the views we experience today.

And slowly, the vision comes into focus.
