INCIDENT REPORT | WELFARE CHECK AND DISCOVERY OF DECEASED PERSON
Yesterday afternoon, *Homeland Security SA* received numerous calls regarding concern for the welfare of a 78-year-old male resident who had not been seen for approximately 24 hours.
The resident was known to follow a consistent daily routine, regularly attending bowls games and providing someone with a lift in the mornings. However, on this occasion, he had not provided the usual lift and had failed to attend his scheduled bowls game, raising concerns among those who knew him.
*Homeland Security SA* immediately dispatched members to his residential address at an apartment complex to conduct a welfare check.
Upon arrival, members made contact with a neighbour, who confirmed that the resident's vehicle was still parked in the garage and that nobody had seen him. Members attempted to contact the resident telephonically and could hear his phone ringing inside the apartment, but received no response.
The apartment was situated on the third floor and secured by substantial security doors. Due to the building's layout and security features, members were unable to obtain a visual of the interior through the windows. Despite repeated attempts to get a response by knocking and calling out, there was no answer.
Members subsequently managed to contact a relative, who authorised them to force entry into the apartment.
Paul from Lock and Key Cabin in Umbilo was contacted and responded to assist. He successfully assisted in removing the security doors and gaining access through the remaining locked doors.
Once entry was gained, members sadly discovered the resident deceased inside the apartment.
Netcare 911 attended the scene and formally declared the resident deceased. His body was subsequently transported to a funeral home.
