How can the spaces between classrooms be shaped to enhance the experience of a school campus?

Drawing on studies from Julian Cooke on the Venetian campi - public squares formed by surrounding buildings - this design proposal for a Primary School explores how a sequence of outdoor plazas can create a connected campus.

The precedent study examines how walls, entrances and openings establish a balance between enclosure and connection: giving each space its own character while maintaining relationships with the spaces beyond.

These principles inform the arrangement of the campus plazas, conceived not as leftover spaces between buildings, but as outdoor rooms that contribute to the character and continuity of the school as a whole.

An artwork-like entrance gate and fence, developed from a simple steel palisade system.

Themes embedded in uBomi’s brand identity, centered on hope, agency and helping communities thrive, informed the geometry, parametrically developed into a changing rhythm of steel elements.

A standard fencing system becomes part boundary, part artwork, and a recognizable threshold to the site.

El Shaddai Music, Theatre and Arts Centre: designing in section to create a flexible, performance hall.

With the walls kept deliberately solid, light and ventilation are introduced from above. A light shaft brings soft, diffused daylight into the volume while enabling natural ventilation, and can be fully closed with external shutters when blackout conditions are required.

A simple sectional move that allows the hall to shift between everyday school use and performance.

We’re pleased to share that Apex Stellenbosch has been shortlisted for the 2026 SCAPE Awards in the Education category.

The project transforms an existing agricultural shed and processing building into a contemporary learning environment, working with the character and constraints of the existing structures to create a new school campus.
