Every home has one. The window that is perfectly pleasant until mid-afternoon, then turns the room into the hottest, brightest place in the house until the sun goes down.

Three things help.

One: lower the blind before the sun reaches the glass, not after. Heat that is already in the room stays in the room.

Two: screen fabric keeps the view while cutting glare and UV. Darker screen colours give a clearer view out. Lighter colours reflect more heat.

Three: if it is a bedroom or TV room, blockout is the honest answer. Screen fabric reduces the sun. Blockout ends the conversation.

Very few windows are perfectly square. Walls settle. Frames shift. Plaster is thicker in one corner than the other.

Measure the width once, say at the top, and you have measured one point on a shape that is rarely the same size all the way down. A few millimetres is enough for a recess blind to catch on one side and leave a gap on the other.

The fix: measure the width at the top, middle and bottom. Measure the height on the left, centre and right. For a recess fit, the smallest number wins.

For a few weeks every October, the Highveld turns purple. And for most of those weeks, the view is happening on the other side of a window.

The blind decides how much of it you get. A roller raised fully leaves nothing but a slim line at the top of the frame, with nothing between you and the canopy. Screen fabric keeps the view intact through the heat of the afternoon, while cutting glare and UV.

The jacarandas are only here briefly. The frame should be worth looking through.

The brief was simple: complete darkness at 6am and full light when we choose to raise the blind.

Blockout roller, face-fixed above the frame, colour-matched to the ceiling. The brackets concealed. The chain falling on the left side because of where the bed sits.

These are not aesthetic choices. They are functional decisions.

Translucent fabric diffuses light without eliminating it — the room stays bright, the direct sun is softened, and the window treatment disappears into the background. It works in living rooms and lounges where soft light is the goal. It will also provide privacy at night.

Screen fabric allows a clear view outward while reducing glare and UV exposure. It works in home offices and rooms with views worth keeping. It does not provide privacy at night.

Blockout is the choice when darkness is the requirement — bedrooms, media rooms, rooms with west-facing windows where the afternoon sun is intolerable. It does one thing completely.

Most homes need all three. The question is which room needs which.

Floors, surfaces, cupboards, the stoep — the spring clean covers most of it. The blinds are almost always left out.

Three months of winter means three months of accumulated dust on fabric that is often at eye level and almost never cleaned. A roller blind that has not been wiped since June is carrying everything June through August deposited on it.

It takes a damp microfibre cloth and ten minutes. Lowered, left in position, wiped top to bottom without pressure — the fabric responds immediately. Nothing needs to come down. Nothing needs a specialist.

Six weeks of low light, closed rooms, and the feeling that the house has been working against you. September is where that reverses.

The light is back at an angle that fills rather than glares. The mornings are worth opening the blinds for. The rooms that felt correct in winter now need to be reassessed for what spring is going to ask of them.

Translucent rollers. Screen fabric at the office window. A lighter touch through every room. Spring is not a decoration decision — it is a recalibration.
