Innovation in architecture is not about chasing what is new. It is about finding better answers. 📐

A more considered response to the site. A more efficient structural approach. A more liveable spatial arrangement. A material choice that performs better over time. These are the kinds of innovations we pursue on every project — not because they are fashionable, but because they produce buildings that work better for the people inside them.

At Design Scape Architects, that is what we mean when we describe ourselves as innovative. Not novelty for its own sake — but rigour in the service of better outcomes.

The first visit to a site is not about what to build. It is about listening. 🔍

We ask: Where does the sun rise and set — and what does that mean for light and heat across the day? How does water move across this land? What does the street tell us about scale, character and context? What constraints will shape this project before a single line is drawn?

Ballito 667 is a good example of this. The site had no dominant views, no obvious natural features to respond to. Most designers would have fought that. We turned inward instead — internalising views, celebrating every subtle nuance the site offered, however modest.

Every site has answers. The skill is knowing what to look for — and what to do with what you find.

At Design Scape Architects, site analysis is never a box to tick. It is where every project begins.

Nine floors. One department. A complete transformation. 🏢

3 Dorp Street in Cape Town presented a brief that is more common than it appears — an existing government building that no longer worked the way it needed to. The Department of Environmental Affairs required a total replanning and interior redesign of all nine floors, an improved building entry that connected better to the street and neighbouring buildings, and a redesigned facade incorporating green building principles to reduce the building's energy consumption.

This is the kind of project where the value of good architecture is not immediately obvious from the outside. It is felt by the people who work there every day — in how the space flows, how the building performs, and how it serves the organisation inside it.

At Design Scape Architects, we bring the same rigour to a government office refurbishment as we do to any other commission. Because the people who use these buildings deserve nothing less.

Some buildings carry more than function. They carry memory. 🏚️

The Bertha Retreat at Boschendal presented one of the most layered briefs we have worked with. Nine existing farm cottages — structures with minimal architectural value but profound cultural significance — needed to be transformed into a contemporary retreat without erasing what they represented.

Our response was not to demolish or disguise. It was to remember.

New spaces were displaced to fall outside the existing envelopes — creating zones that show the original fabric, acknowledge the cultural history of the people who once lived here, and mark the transition from what these buildings were to what they now are. Entrance and circulation zones reinforce this narrative at every threshold.

Adaptive reuse, at its best, does not pretend the past did not happen. It makes the past part of the architecture.

At Design Scape Architects, this is the kind of brief that reminds us why architecture matters beyond the building itself.

From a few marker lines to a home on the hill. 🏡

Our client wanted a coastal getaway that felt like one long, shady stoep and sat quietly in the fynbos above the Gourits River. We started with the slope, the wind and the views, and let those draw the plan.

Swipe through to see the journey from first sketch to 3D model.

Planning a home on a sloping site? Send us a message. We'd love to hear about it.

Working across sectors is not just a business decision. It makes us better architects. 📐

The spatial rigour we develop on a healthcare project sharpens our thinking on a commercial brief. The site sensitivity we apply on a residential project informs how we read an urban context for a civic building. The complexity we manage on a public infrastructure commission raises our standard on every project that follows.

Our clients benefit from that breadth, even when they don't see it directly. The thinking behind their project draws on everything we have learned across every sector we work in.

At Design Scape Architects, that range is not incidental. It is part of how we deliver better outcomes.

The Complications of Construction 🚧

Morning light, concrete, steel and a forest of scaffolding - the beautiful chaos behind bringing architecture to life.

Every project begins as a precise vision on paper, but the journey from drawing to structure is layered with challenges, coordination and craftsmanship.

VR Experience – Public Square Concept 🎦

We recently gave our clients a Virtual Reality tour of a public space design that they requested for an under-utilised public square. The VR glasses allow for a fully immersive experience of the design, concept and location.

A client is able to navigate through the conceptual design and experience it seamlessly. We are finding the VR Experience to be an effective design tool for visualisation and immersion for our clients.

Kagiso Incubator Project 🍀

The incubator project was a co-working industrial space for artisans and industrial SMMEs within the Kagiso community in Johannesburg. The project was spearheaded by Property Point on behalf of Growthpoint Properties.

The project entails the refurbishment of an existing industrial space within an industrial park. The refurbishment will allow the factory space to be segmented into smaller, manageable industrial spaces for SMMEs and individual artisans.

The project was officially launched in February 2026. Watch this Space!
