Found among the grasslands and rocky slopes of the Eastern Cape, 𝗘. 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗶 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗶 is a fascinating species with a natural habitat in the Cathcart and Queenstown districts.

With its natural range stretching along the eastern coast of Southern Africa, 𝗘. 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘅 is a fascinating species adapted to warm coastal conditions.

Found from Kosi Bay in northern KwaZulu Natal through to Mozambique, reaching approximately 100 km north of Vilanculos.

🌿 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗮𝗱? 🌿

At first glance, cycads can sometimes be mistaken for palms or tree ferns. But take a closer look and you'll find some distinctive features that set them apart.

🌱 𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗸
Many cycads develop a thick, sturdy trunk with visible leaf scars forming patterns along the stem.

🌿 𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀
Their leaves emerge in a crown from the trunk. Depending on the species, the foliage can range from deep green to striking blue grey, with characteristic leaflets.

🌰 𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀
Unlike flowering plants, cycads don't produce flowers. Instead, they reproduce through separate male and female cones.

🌿 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 🌿

Spring is in full swing and your cycads are entering an active growth period. October is a great time to give them a little extra attention.

🌱 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴
Apply a low nitrogen organic fertiliser or a suitable fertiliser such as 7:1:3 to support healthy growth and root development.

💧 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴
As temperatures rise, gradually increase watering. If rainfall is limited, give your cycads a deep watering every 7 to 14 days. Always allow the soil to dry properly between waterings.

🪨 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲
Good drainage is essential. Cycads do not tolerate waterlogged soil and excess moisture can contribute to serious root and caudex problems.

🌿 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀
Remove weeds around the base of your cycads so they aren't competing for water and nutrients.

🐛 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀
Keep an eye on new growth and emerging fronds. Check for scale insects, caterpillars and other pests and treat problems early with an appropriate insecticide.

A rare and remarkable species, 𝗘. 𝗱𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘂𝘀 has an extremely limited natural distribution.

This species is restricted to just two granite outcrops in the eastern part of Limpopo, near Mica and Gravelotte.
