Please be aware that we are again seeing an uptick in instances of cellphone grabbings around restaurants and places of social gathering.
Two separate instances were reported in our sector last night.
Two different vehicles were used, but it is suspected that it is the same gang.
We need to pay more attention to what security guards are warning us about.
In one of the cases last night, a security guard warned a young lady, who was using her celphone next to the road at a known hotspot, to be careful of cellphone grabbing.
She chose to wave him off and continue her conversation. A few moments later, a person exited a vehicle, ran up to her, and grabbed the phone. Both the victim and the security guard stood powerless as the vehicle then sped off.
We need to develop for ourselves and, particularly our children, a good dose of situational awareness.
In the second case, a young man was standing at the side of the road whilst waiting for an Uber taxi.
He was continuously looking at his phone and had no idea that a man casually walked right up to him before grabbing his phone. Again, he was left powerless as the thieves sped away.
