Reptilia keepers, this one is for you.

Show us an enclosure you are proud of.

It could be a reptile enclosure, spider setup, small animal home or a habitat you have recently upgraded.

Tell us one thing you changed that made the setup better for the animal.

Maybe you added more cover.

Maybe you improved the climbing space.

Maybe you reorganised everything.

Maybe you finally completed the custom setup you had been planning for months.

Post a photo in the comments.

The goal is not to find the prettiest enclosure.

We want to see thoughtful ideas that other keepers can learn from.

Find the Vet Before You Need the Vet

Here is something that should be on the shopping list for every new exotic pet owner, even though you cannot put it in a trolley:

The details of a reptile or exotic-pet savvy vet.

Do not wait until something is wrong to start searching.

Know who you can contact, where they are and how you would transport your animal safely if veterinary care became necessary.

Specialist veterinary access is one of the things welfare organisations recommend considering before bringing an exotic animal home.

Reptilia can assist with husbandry questions and emergency advice, but medical concerns should be assessed by an appropriately experienced vet.

Responsible ownership includes having a plan for the days when everything is not going perfectly.

Not all pet stores are the same — and when it comes to living animals, that matters 💚

When you buy a pet, you’re not just buying an animal — you’re taking on a responsibility.

At a specialist store like Reptilia, we:
âś” Monitor health, behaviour, and feeding daily
âś” Match pets to the right owners and lifestyles
✔ Give honest advice (even if it means saying “this isn’t the right pet”)
âś” Focus on proper setups, nutrition, and long-term care
âś” Put animal welfare before quick sales

Big stores sell products.

Specialist stores sell knowledge, experience, and support.

That’s the difference — and your pet feels it too.

Give the Setup a Test Run

You have bought the enclosure.

Everything is plugged in.

Does that mean it is ready for the animal?

Not necessarily.

A very useful habit is to set the habitat up in advance and give yourself time to see how it actually performs.

Are the temperatures stable?

Is the equipment doing what you expected?

Can you operate everything confidently?

Is there anything you need to change while the enclosure is still empty?

The RSPCA recommends having a reptile's environment running before bringing the animal home so problems can be identified and corrected first.

The animal should be the final addition to the setup, not the first.

Reptilia has been part of Vanderbijlpark since 2006.

What started with reptiles such as snakes, spiders and bearded dragons gradually expanded into a much wider world of reptiles, small exotic animals, enclosures, feeders, accessories, educational experiences and specialist services.

A lot has changed over the years.

One thing that has not changed is how many questions come with keeping an unusual pet.

And that is a good thing.

We would rather have someone ask ten questions before buying an animal than discover ten problems afterwards.

If you have been visiting Reptilia for years, tell us:

One reptile keeper's shopping list might say crickets.

Another needs mealworms.

Another needs superworms, roaches, mice or rats.

Feeding exotic pets is rarely one-size-fits-all, which is why understanding the animal's diet should happen before bringing it home.

Reptilia supplies a range of live feeders, and our wider food and feeding range includes feeder insects, rodents, frozen feeders, supplements and feeding equipment.

Not sure what size or type of feeder you need?

Ask us before you buy.

Is It Decoration or Does It Have a Purpose?

A branch is not always just a branch.

A hide is not simply something that makes an enclosure look interesting.

Good enclosure design gives an animal opportunities to perform natural behaviours such as climbing, hiding, exploring, basking or moving through different areas of its habitat.

That is what enrichment is about.

When choosing branches, vines, hides, plants, rocks and other enclosure features, ask:

“What can my animal actually do with this?”

An attractive enclosure is great.

An attractive enclosure that also supports natural behaviour is better. Research and welfare guidance increasingly recognise environmental complexity and opportunities for natural behaviour as important parts of reptile husbandry.

Bunnies may be small, but they need far more than a cage, a bowl and a few treats.

A good rabbit setup should give them room to move, stretch, stand upright and explore. Rabbits can also become bored easily, so boxes, safe chew items, tunnels and other enrichment can help keep them active.

Diet matters just as much.

Good-quality hay or grass should make up most of a rabbit’s diet, with suitable greens and a smaller amount of pellets. Hay is especially important for digestion and for helping wear down continuously growing teeth.

And don’t forget the heat. Rabbits can struggle in high temperatures, so they need access to shade and a cooler area, especially during warm South African weather.

Before bringing a bunny home, think about space, diet, enrichment and daily care, not just the size of the animal.

Not every exotic pet needs the same kind of home.

Some species need more floor space. Others make better use of height. Heating, lighting, ventilation, access for cleaning and room for enrichment all need to be considered when planning an enclosure.

That is why Reptilia also offers customised reptile enclosures on request.

A custom enclosure should not simply fit the space in your home. It should work for the animal that will live in it.

Chinchillas and hot South African weather need careful planning.

Reptilia’s chinchilla care guide specifically warns about heat stress and recommends keeping them in a cool, low-humidity environment.

Their enclosure should also give them opportunities to climb, jump, hide and stay active.

If you are considering a chinchilla, temperature management should be part of your planning before bringing one home.
