How should flat tops and parapet walls be waterproofed? 💧

Flat tops and parapet walls are high-risk areas because water can sit on these surfaces and move into the wall if they are not properly protected.

When using Dulux Rainshield, the system should be applied over the full length of the wall top. It should not stop on the flat surface only — it should be taken up, over and down the parapet, extending at least 25mm down the sides.

This helps protect vulnerable edges and wall tops where water ingress can often begin.

What is a water-break free surface? 💧

A water-break free surface is an important check when preparing galvanised metal before painting.

After cleaning the surface with the correct cleaner and rinsing thoroughly, the water should sheet evenly across the metal. If the water beads, pulls away or separates, there may still be contamination on the surface.

This means the surface may need to be cleaned again before priming or coating.

Why is rust preparation important before painting metal?

Rust should never be painted over without proper preparation. If left untreated, it can continue to affect the metal underneath the coating, leading to poor adhesion, staining, blistering or premature coating failure.

Before painting, rusted areas should be sanded and prepared, with loose rust and unstable material removed. The area should then be primed with the correct primer, such as Dulux Rustshield, before continuing with the recommended topcoat system.

Severely rusted sheets should be replaced rather than painted over.

Applying paint too thickly or thinly can cause problems. 🙌

Over-thinning may reduce coverage and weaken the finished film. Applying a coat too heavily can result in slow curing, wrinkling or an uneven finish. 🖌️

For better results:
• Follow the product’s thinning guidance
• Apply the recommended number of coats
• Respect drying and recoating times
• Avoid trying to achieve full coverage in one excessively heavy coat

Painting over mould does not remove the problem.

Mould commonly develops in damp areas with limited sunlight or ventilation. If it is not properly removed before painting, it may return through the new coating. 🫟

Before repainting:
• Identify and address the source of moisture
• Remove existing mould growth
• Clean and prepare the complete affected area
• Allow the surface to dry appropriately
• Select a coating suited to the environment

A fresh coat should be the final step, not the mould treatment plan.

Does the wall leave a fine powder on your hand when you rub it?

This is known as chalking. It happens when a powdery layer forms on the paint film during weathering and can make the colour appear faded.

Possible causes include:
• Normal weathering over time
• Using a lower-grade coating
• Applying an interior paint outdoors
• Prolonged exposure to sunlight

Do not paint directly over a chalky surface. Remove the loose residue and use the correct preparation system before repainting.
