The oak starts at the lift door and keeps going all the way up.

This Meriton townhouse in Pagewood has a lift and a stair between its levels. The same pale oak runs on every one of them, from the living room up to the bedrooms.

The stairs are where you'd notice a mismatch first. Here the treads match the floor, so the colour carries straight up from the boards below. You don't see a change in tone at the first step.

At the top, the landing picks it up again and leads into the bedroom. Swipe through and you can follow it from the ground floor to the top.

Dark green stone, set straight down on pale oak.

This is the display suite for Archer & Albert, Coronation's new building in Chatswood, designed by Woods Bagot.

The same green marble turns up all the way through. There's a plinth under a window, a long bench in the gallery and a block by the door. Each one sits right on the floor, with no rug or base under it.

The floor is our Ivory White from the Milano Collection. Next to it, the stone looks darker and the white veins stand out more. Where the two meet, the oak grain runs right up to the edge of the marble.

The darkest thing in this room is the fireplace.

It sits on a long, low, dark ledge that runs along the wall. The pale oak comes right up to the edge of that ledge and stops in one straight line.

A fire needs something under it that won't burn, so the timber has to stop somewhere. Mathieson made that stopping point part of the wall, so it looks planned from the start.

Everything else here is light: pale walls, sheer curtains and our Ivory White oak underfoot. Against all that, one plain black heater is plenty.

Both of these are oak.

The dark one is the joinery. It's oak veneer that Mathieson had stained a deep chocolate brown. The pale one is the floor, our Ivory White from the Milano Collection.

Even stained that dark, the joinery still shows its grain. So does the floor right below it. Up close you can tell it's the same timber, even though one is dark brown and the other is close to white.

Mathieson used the dark oak for the bookshelves, the kitchen, the wardrobes and the vanities. Phillip Mathieson says the rail details on each piece give it "a sense of robustness and permanence."

Thanks again to the Mathieson team, and to Dave Wheeler for the photos.

When the sun's out, it draws stripes across this landing.

The light comes through the curved balustrade at the top of the stair in this Vaucluse home. Each upright throws a shadow, and the shadows bend with the curve of the landing.

The oak is a pale grey wash, so the lines come out sharp and dark. On a deeper floor they'd be much softer.

Down the stair, off-form concrete walls rise to a round skylight. Further in, the living room looks across the harbour to the city.

The oak starts at the lift door and keeps going all the way up.

This townhouse at Meriton's Rivera in Eastgardens has its own lift as well as a stair. The same pale oak runs on every level, from the living room up to the bedrooms.

The stairs are where you'd notice a mismatch first. Here the treads match the floor, so the colour carries straight up from the boards below. You don't see a change in tone at the first step.

Open the door and the room carries on outside.

The oak runs right up to the door frame. Past it there's the balcony, then the treetops, then the city.

The opening sits in a deep brick reveal, so the view gets a thick, warm frame around it. It's the same clay brick Mathieson used on the outside of the building.

Ariel Ophir-Verheyden led the project at Mathieson. Ariel says the lighting was used "to highlight material texture and spatial thresholds." A door like this is one of those thresholds. It's where our floor ends and the outside begins.

The dark shapes and the pale ones in this floor are the same timber.

Both are oak. The octagons are carbonised, which means the oak is heated until it turns a deep brown. The little diamonds between them are left natural.

Up close you can see the same grain in both. Only the colour has changed.

The hall is an old brick building at South Eveleigh, and most nights it's set with long tables and chairs. These photos were taken before the guests arrived, which is about the only time you see the whole floor at once.

Stone usually gets picked at the yard, standing right next to the slab.

The floor often gets picked weeks later, back at a desk. All you have then is a photo of the slab on your phone.

Our colour book is easy to bring along instead. All 48 of our finishes are in one book, in real timber, from Ivory White through to Obsidian Oak. Open it on the slab and you can see which oaks sit well with the veining before anything gets ordered.

It's free for designers. Link in bio, or email [email protected] and we'll post one out.

Look at the boards at the bottom of this photo.

On a pale oak you'd hardly notice the grain from here. On a dark one it's the first thing you see. The lines and flecks in the timber come forward as the colour gets deeper.

That's what we like about this floor at The Landmark in St Leonards. The kitchen around it is dark too, with dark timber cupboards, a black oven and brown stone on the bench. With that much dark in one room, a smooth floor could look flat. Up close, the grain keeps it from looking that way.

Swipe for a closer look at the boards beside the rug.
