SHOULD I REPLACE ALL MY WINDOWS AT ONCE?

Not necessarily.

If your windows are similar in age and several are beginning to fail, doing a larger replacement project may make sense.

But if only a few windows are causing problems, you may be able to prioritize.

Start with the windows causing the biggest issues:

Drafts
Failed seals
Water concerns
Poor operation
Comfort problems
Visible deterioration

Then create a plan for the rest.

At SM Windows & Doors, we'd rather help you determine what actually needs replacing than tell you everything has to go.

DO I NEED A PERMIT TO REPLACE WINDOWS OR DOORS IN OTTAWA?

This is a great question to ask before starting your project.

For a straightforward replacement where a window or door is going into the same-size opening, the City of Ottawa lists this among projects that generally do not require a building permit.

However, enlarging an opening, creating a new opening or making structural changes can be a different situation.

In other words:

Replacing a window and changing the structure of your home aren't necessarily the same project.

If you're considering making a window larger or adding a new door or window opening, make sure the requirements are checked first.

WHAT TYPE OF WINDOW IS BEST: CASEMENT, SLIDER, AWNING OR PICTURE?

There isn't one answer because different windows do different jobs.

A casement window can provide excellent ventilation and sealing.

An awning window can be useful where you want ventilation with a different opening configuration.

A slider can work well where space or practicality matters.

A picture window gives you a large uninterrupted view but doesn't open.

The best choice depends on the room, location, ventilation needs, view, size of the opening and how you use the space.

Don't choose every window in your house simply because it's the same style you already have.

Sometimes replacing your windows is an opportunity to make the room work better.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A NEW FRONT DOOR?

A front door has a big job.

It needs to look great, but it also plays a role in your home's security, weather protection, energy efficiency and curb appeal.

Before choosing based on colour and style alone, consider:

How well does it seal?
What material is it made from?
What glass options are available?
How energy efficient is it?
What security features are included?
How will it stand up to Ottawa weather?
How will it be installed?

And then comes the fun part: finding a style that completely changes the look of your home.

A new front door isn't just an entrance.

It's one of the first things people notice about your house.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY WINDOWS NEED TO BE REPLACED?

Your windows don't have to be broken to be telling you there's a problem.

Some of the most common warning signs include:

Cold drafts around the window
Fog or moisture between the panes
Difficulty opening or closing
Water staining around the frame
Visible deterioration
Rooms that feel noticeably colder near the windows

These are also among the common signs identified in current window-replacement guidance for Ottawa homeowners.

But here's the important part: one problem doesn't automatically mean you need a whole house full of new windows.

Have the windows assessed first and find out what actually needs attention.

CAN A NEW FRONT DOOR REALLY INCREASE YOUR HOME'S CURB APPEAL?

Absolutely.

Your front door is one of the first things people notice when they look at your home, which means changing it can have a surprisingly big impact without changing the entire exterior.

A different colour, modern glass insert, new hardware or completely different door style can transform an entrance.

But curb appeal is only part of the decision.

A new exterior door can also give you an opportunity to improve energy efficiency, security, weather protection and everyday functionality.

So if you're thinking about updating the outside of your home, don't overlook the entrance.

Sometimes one door can change the entire first impression.

What would you choose for your home: bold and modern, classic and timeless, or something in between?

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO REPLACE WINDOWS IN OTTAWA?

This is one of the first questions homeowners ask, and there's a reason you can find such wildly different answers online.

The cost of a replacement window depends on much more than its size. Window style, glass package, frame, installation method, finishing and the condition of the existing opening can all affect the final price. Current Ottawa pricing guides show substantial variation for exactly this reason.

So instead of asking only, "What's the price per window?", ask:

What exactly is included?
What type of glass am I getting?
How is it being installed?
What finishing is included?
What warranty comes with it?

The lowest quote isn't necessarily the best value, and the highest quote doesn't automatically mean the best window.

At SM Windows & Doors, we'll help you understand exactly what you're getting and why.

CAN WINDOWS REALLY MAKE MY HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT?

Yes, but there's an important catch.

A high-performance window is only as good as the complete system and its installation.

Energy-efficient glazing, Low-E coatings, insulated glass units and properly sealed frames can all contribute to reducing heat transfer.

But if the window isn't properly installed and sealed, you're compromising the performance you paid for.

That's why homeowners shouldn't shop for replacement windows based on appearance or price alone.

Ask about the window.

Then ask about the installation.

Both matter.

FIBREGLASS OR STEEL FRONT DOOR: WHICH IS BETTER?

This is one of the most common questions homeowners have when shopping for a new exterior door.

And the answer isn't as simple as saying one is always better.

Steel doors can offer excellent strength, security and value.

Fibreglass doors can offer excellent durability, energy efficiency and a wide range of finishes, including realistic wood-grain looks without the maintenance of traditional wood.

So which should you choose?

Think about your budget, the look you want, how exposed the entrance is to the weather, maintenance and the features that matter most to you.

The best exterior door isn't necessarily the most expensive one.

It's the one that's best suited to your home.

Come talk to SM Windows & Doors and we'll walk you through the options.

WHY DO MY WINDOWS HAVE CONDENSATION?

Here's where it gets interesting because where the condensation appears matters.

Moisture on the room-side surface of the glass can be related to indoor humidity and the temperature of the glass.

But fog or moisture trapped between the panes is different. It can indicate that the sealed glass unit has failed.

Condensation, drafts and moisture are among the recurring problems Ottawa window-replacement resources tell homeowners to watch for.

And here's something homeowners sometimes don't realize:

Fog between the panes doesn't automatically mean every part of the window needs replacing.

Have it properly assessed before assuming you need a completely new window.
