Bold design, bespoke details and a home full of personality.

When these returning clients moved into their large, modern home in Boston Spa, they wanted to make it feel like their own.

And they weren’t afraid to go bold!

We started with the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, creating a space that felt warm, welcoming and full of character, while still working beautifully for everyday family life.

One of our favourite features has to be the bespoke wooden slatted divider we designed, complete with integrated lighting.

It subtly separates the different areas without closing off the room or losing that lovely open-plan feel.

We also introduced bespoke booth seating, beautiful window dressings, carefully considered styling and darker, richer tones to bring warmth and a little drama into the space.

There was so much more to this project than choosing the furniture and finishing touches.

Working from our drawings, a building contractor carried out the structural knock-through, and we worked closely with the kitchen designers to make sure the layout and overall scheme came together beautifully.

The result is a statement family space that’s practical, full of personality and completely tailored to the people who live there.

When you’re designing a master suite with a bedroom, dressing room and en-suite, there are a few things we’d always think carefully about.

And after 10 years of designing homes, these are three we’d avoid…

1. Choose beautiful furniture without considering the proportions.

That gorgeous oversized bed might look incredible in a showroom, but if there’s barely enough room to walk around it or open your wardrobe doors, it’s probably not the right choice!

We’d always start with the layout and make sure everything works together before choosing individual pieces.

2. Rely on one type of lighting.

The lighting you need when you’re getting ready in the morning is very different from what you want when you’re winding down in bed at night.

We’d think about everything from practical lighting around mirrors and wardrobes to softer bedside lighting that makes the bedroom feel warm and inviting.

And we’d plan it all from the beginning, not as an afterthought!

3. Design each space without thinking about the others.
Your bedroom, dressing room and en-suite don’t need to match perfectly.

In fact, we’d much rather they each had their own personality!

But we always look at how the colours, materials and finishes connect so the whole suite feels beautifully considered.

A luxurious master suite isn’t simply about having three beautiful spaces, it’s more about making sure they all work together, both practically and visually.

Sometimes, the biggest transformation comes from knowing what to take away, rather than what to add.

For this beautiful period property in Harrogate, our brief was to create an elegant, welcoming lounge that made the most of the natural light while celebrating the home’s original features.

One of the biggest changes we made were to…. the windows.

The large bay windows were a beautiful feature of the room, but the existing heavy pelmets were hiding some of the architectural details that made the space so special.

So we replaced them with bespoke window dressings, creating a cleaner, more contemporary look that allowed the original coving to shine and gave the room a greater sense of height.

We also introduced made-to-measure voiles to give our client privacy throughout the day without compromising on natural light.

Period properties rarely come with perfectly straightforward measurements, so we had custom bay poles made to follow the unique shape of the windows for a beautifully seamless finish.

The result is a room that feels lighter, more elegant and completely in keeping with the character of the property.

This lounge was part of a wider home redesign, and it’s another lovely family connection for us too… we’ve also had the pleasure of working on her sister’s AND her daughter’s homes!

Spending more money doesn’t always mean getting a better result.

There are plenty of things we’d happily save on, but some are genuinely worth investing in. Here are three we’d put near the top of the list…

**1. Made-to-measure curtains and blinds.**

Beautifully fitted window treatments can completely transform a room.

The right fabric, fullness, length and fitting soften a space, make windows look bigger and bring everything together in a way off-the-shelf options don’t always achieve.

It’s one of those things you might not appreciate until you see the difference!

**2. Good-quality, well-planned lighting.**

You can have gorgeous furniture, fabrics and colours, but if the lighting isn’t right, the room can fall flat.

We’re not talking about expensive statement pendants. We’re talking about lighting that works for how you actually use the room.

A mix of ceiling lights, wall lights and lamps can make a space feel warmer, more inviting and more considered. And when planned from the start, good lighting makes everything else look even better.

**3. Professional space planning.**

It might sound obvious coming from interior designers, but hear us out!

One of the most expensive mistakes is buying beautiful things without considering how they’ll work together.

A sofa that’s too big. A dining table with no space to move around it. Lighting in the wrong place. Storage that looks lovely but doesn’t work for your family.

Getting the layout right BEFORE you start spending can save you from costly mistakes later.

That’s why we always start with the bigger picture. It’s not about spending more on your home, but making sure what you DO spend goes towards the things that make the biggest difference.

Some of the best design decisions are the ones you barely notice at all.

Until they’re wrong…

Where your plug sockets are.

Nothing ruins a beautifully considered room quite like an extension lead trailing across it because there isn’t a socket where you actually need one.

Which way your doors open.

And whether they collide with furniture, radiators or each other.

Where your light switches are.

You shouldn’t have to walk across a dark room to turn a light on.

Whether there’s somewhere to put your drink.

Every comfortable seat needs somewhere within reach for the practical bits of actually living there.

Where the everyday clutter naturally lands.

Keys, post, chargers, shoes, bags… good storage works best when it’s where you actually need it.

How you move through the room.

A beautiful layout isn’t much use if you’re constantly squeezing around the coffee table or navigating around furniture.

Good interior design isn’t only about the things you notice.

It’s also about all those little decisions that mean you never have to think about them at all.

There comes a point when the home that has worked beautifully for your family for years might not quite fit your life anymore.

The children have left for university or moved into homes of their own.

Bedrooms sit empty for most of the year.

The garden that was once perfect for family life suddenly feels like a lot to maintain and you start wondering whether you really need quite so much space.

But being ready to downsize doesn’t mean you’re ready to downgrade.

You still want a beautiful home.

You still want space to have the family back for Sunday lunch or the children home at Christmas.

You still want quality furniture, beautiful fabrics, considered lighting and rooms you’re proud to invite friends into….you just want a home that works better for the way you live now!

And actually, moving somewhere smaller can be an opportunity to be much more considered about what you choose.

Keeping the pieces you’ve collected and loved over the years.

Investing in fewer, better pieces.
Creating clever bespoke storage.
Making every room work harder.

And prioritising the things that matter to you now, whether that’s entertaining, travelling more or simply having a home that’s easier to look after.

We can help you work out what comes with you, what will work in the new space and what you need to make your new house feel like your home.

Then we can take care of the design, sourcing, project management and installation, right through to the final finishing touches.

Because this stage of life shouldn’t feel like settling for less.

We’ve been down in London visiting Decorex International | Europe’s Luxury Interior Design Show and the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour - Luxury Interiors , exploring the latest collections from designers and suppliers around the world.

And WOW, there was a lot to take in!

Beautiful fabrics, incredible furniture, statement lighting and some seriously high-end pieces that had us feeling very inspired.

A few things we kept noticing…

Lots of texture and layering: Beautiful combinations of materials, rattan lighting and woven details incorporated into furniture.

Rich, warm colours: Burnt oranges, burgundy and chocolate browns were everywhere, and we’re absolutely loving the warmth they bring to a room.

BIG statement pieces: Oversized vases, beautiful foliage, faux trees and some incredible feature chandeliers that really become the focal point of a space.

Clever new technology: We spotted some brilliant innovations in lighting, including wireless switches that open up some exciting possibilities for how we design a room.

But one of our biggest takeaways?

There is SO much choice out there.

And if we can sometimes feel overwhelmed by it all, we can only imagine how it feels when you’re trying to make decisions for your own home alongside everything else life throws at you!

That’s a huge part of what we do for our clients.

We get to explore all these wonderful collections, discover new suppliers, find inspiration in some of the most extraordinary high-end interiors and then work out how to translate those ideas into beautiful, practical homes that suit our clients, their lifestyles and their budgets.

Because you don’t need a London showroom budget to take inspiration from London showroom design!

We’ve also come home with some VERY exciting ideas for our own showroom next year… but more on that another time!

Swipe through for a little look at what caught our eye in London.

Open-plan doesn’t have to mean one big beige room.
When your kitchen, dining and living spaces all flow into one another, it can be tempting to play it safe.

One colour palette. Similar finishes. Nothing too bold in case the whole space starts to feel busy.

But this project is a brilliant example of how much personality you can bring into an open-plan home while still making the whole space feel beautifully connected.

Designed for a busy young family, we kept key architectural features of the older property while introducing colour, warmth and details inspired by the client’s travels.

The trick was making sure everything spoke to each other without everything matching.

Colour carries through the different areas.
Individual pieces bring character.

And each part of the room has its own purpose and personality, while still feeling like part of one considered scheme.

The result is vibrant, practical and completely personal to the family who lives there.

And this one really was a family affair… we’ve also had the pleasure of designing her mum’s AND her auntie’s homes!

There are some things we’ll never get tired of…

✨ Colour with personality.
We love a neutral, but we’ll always say yes to the colour you can’t stop thinking about rather than playing it safe.

✨ Mixing old with new.
Not everything in your home needs to arrive on the same delivery van! Keep the pieces you love and let’s make them work alongside something new.

✨ Going bigger with artwork.
If you’re debating between two sizes, you can probably guess which one we’re choosing…

✨ Pattern on pattern.
Stripes with florals. Small prints with larger ones. Different patterns can absolutely live together when there’s something connecting them.

✨ Bespoke details.
The perfect piece doesn’t always exist. Sometimes the answer is creating something specifically for your room.

✨ Rooms with their own identity.
Your kitchen, bedroom and living room don’t need to look the same. They just need to feel like they belong to the same home.

And perhaps the biggest one after 10 years?

✨ Designing for the people who actually live there.
Not for Instagram. Not for the next trend. Not for what everyone else is doing.

For you.

10 years in and we’re definitely not changing our minds on that one.

We think it’s time for colour again.
Somewhere along the way, homes got very beige.

And don’t get us wrong, we love a beautiful neutral, but if you keep finding yourself drawn to rooms filled with rich greens, deep blues, warm reds, pattern and personality…

Maybe it’s time to stop saving them and actually bring some colour into your own home.

Colour doesn’t have to mean painting every wall bright pink or completely starting again.

It could be one beautiful chair in a fabric you LOVE.
A patterned curtain.
A deeper colour on the walls.
Artwork that brings a room to life.

Or simply choosing something because it makes you happy rather than because it feels like the ‘safe’ option.
So perhaps this Autumn, it’s time to be a little braver.

Who’s ready for more colour?
