One Season Ends, Another Begins

From Kristi’s Desk — And Just Like That…
October is basically over.
The outdoor nursery is tucked away, fall cleanup is happening, the leaves are everywhere...
And inside?
Christmas is coming. 😂🎄
That's one of the funny things about this business. We don't really finish one season before starting another.
While we're putting the nursery to bed, holiday plants and merchandise are starting to arrive at the Indoor Oasis. At the same time, we're tracking Spring 2027 orders and already thinking about what the greenhouses will look like when we start filling them again.
🍂 Fall outside.
🎄 Holidays inside.
🌸 Spring on my desk.
Apparently we don't believe in working on one season at a time. 😂
But that's also what keeps it fun. There's always something new coming.
So goodbye October...
Let's see what November brings. 💚

🌿 Wednesday in the Garden — Did You Forget Anything? 🥶🍂
Here we are — the last Wednesday in the Garden: Fall Edition before we head into November!
By now, most of the planting is done, the leaves are coming down, and the garden is settling in. But before you officially call it quits for the year, now is a good time for one last walk around the yard.
Because there's always ONE thing we forget until it's frozen solid. 😂
💧 Hoses: Disconnect, drain and store them before we get those really cold nights.
🚰 Outdoor water: Shut off and drain outdoor faucets or irrigation systems that need winterizing.
🪴 Pots & planters: Empty or protect containers that aren't winter-safe. Water trapped inside + a Maine freeze can equal a cracked pot come spring.
✂️ Tools: Clean them up before putting them away. This is also a great time to notice what needs sharpening, replacing or mysteriously disappeared sometime around June. 😂
🌱 Tender plants: If there's anything you planned to overwinter indoors, now is definitely the time to make sure it's protected.
💧 New plantings: Give those recently planted perennials, shrubs and trees one last check. If the soil is dry and the ground hasn't frozen, they may still need water.
🦌 Winter protection: If you have plants that regularly get browsed by deer or damaged over winter, don't wait until after they've found them to think about protection.
And then...
You're allowed to be DONE. 😂🙌
The garden can rest, and so can you — at least until the seed catalogs start showing up and we all suddenly decide it's spring again.
🍂 That's a wrap on Wednesday in the Garden: Fall Edition!
Next Wednesday we're heading inside for the winter. 🏡🌿
What is the ONE garden chore you forget every single year?

One Season Out, Another One In!

🍂 This Week at Windswept: One Season Out, Another One In! October is wrapping up, the gardens are almost tucked in, and we're making that familiar Windswept shift from one season straight into another. Around here, there isn't much of an “in between.” 😂 🍂 In the Garden — Wednesday brings our final Wednesday in the Garden — Fall Edition…...

The Waiting Game
From Kristi’s Desk — Now We Wait…
Remember all those catalogs, orders, changes, phone calls and plant-ordering Tetris?
Well, most of the ordering is DONE.
Now comes the next phase:
Waiting. 😂
Waiting for confirmations.
Checking acknowledgements.
Making sure quantities are right.
Watching for substitutions.
Keeping track of what is coming from where — and WHEN.
And then there are the holiday plants headed for the Indoor Oasis, because apparently we're capable of planning for Christmas and Spring at the exact same time. 😂🎄🌸
This is the part customers don't usually see. Months before a plant ever reaches one of our benches, somebody is making sure it's actually going to get here.
And yes... that somebody is usually sitting at one of the Kristi's Desks with entirely too many order sheets open. 😂

🌿 Wednesday in the Garden — One Last Drink Before Winter 💧🍂
The flowers are fading, leaves are dropping, and the garden is starting to look like it's done for the year…

But don't put that hose away quite yet! 😂

This is especially important if you planted new perennials, trees or shrubs this year — including all those bargain plants some of you took home when we closed the nursery. 👀😂

Even though the tops of your plants may be going dormant, they still need adequate moisture going into winter.

💧 Check the soil. Cooler weather means things aren't drying out as quickly as they did in July, so don't water just because the calendar says you should.

🌳 Pay extra attention to newly planted trees and shrubs. Their root systems haven't had years to establish themselves yet.

🌸 Don't forget those new perennials. Just because the foliage is yellowing or disappearing doesn't mean you should forget what's happening below ground.

🌧️ Let Mother Nature help. If we're getting plenty of rain, you may not need to do anything. But during a dry fall stretch, those newer plantings may appreciate a good, deep drink.

Keep checking them until the ground freezes.

Giving plants adequate moisture going into a Maine winter can help them handle the cold, drying winds and frozen conditions ahead.

And eventually, yes…

You may finally drain the hose and put it away. 😂

Just maybe not quite yet.

Who's already put their hose away for winter? Be honest! 🙋‍♀️😂

Putting Fall to Bed & Planning for Spring

🌿 This Week at Windswept: Putting Fall to Bed & Planning for Spring The leaves are falling, the temperatures are dropping, and we're slowly putting another Maine growing season to bed. But around Windswept, “slowing down” apparently means finding completely different things to do. 😂 💧 In the Garden — Don't put that hose away quite yet! This Wednesday we're talking about one last important fall job, especially for all those newly planted perennials, trees and shrubs....

🌸 From Kristi’s Desk — Spring 2027 Is Already Arriving!
The nursery has barely closed for the season and guess what showed up this week?
A truckload of grower supplies for 2027. 😂🌱
This is the part of running a garden center that most people never really see.
While the outdoor nursery is closed and we're cleaning up from one season, we're already getting ready to grow the next one.
Pots, trays, growing supplies and everything else we need have to be ordered months ahead of time — and now some of it is starting to arrive.
It may only be October, but Spring 2027 isn't just something we're planning on paper anymore.
It's actually showing up on trucks. 😂
Over the next few months, all of these supplies will get organized and ready. Then before we know it, we'll be filling pots, starting plants and watching those empty greenhouses turn green again.
For now, though?
Step one: unload the truck. 😂📦🌿
Spring starts long before you see the first plant sitting on our benches.
And apparently this year, it starts October 14th.

🌿 Wednesday in the Garden — Leaves Are FREE Garden Gold! 🍂
They're falling… and falling… and falling. 😂
Before you bag up every leaf in the yard, remember — those leaves aren't necessarily yard waste. They're free material for your garden!
🍂 Mow them into the lawn. A mower can chop a light layer of leaves into smaller pieces that break down much faster.
🌱 Use shredded leaves in your garden beds. They can help cover and protect the soil while slowly breaking down and adding organic matter.
♻️ Add them to your compost. Dry fall leaves are great “brown” material, so save some for your compost pile.
🐞 It's okay to leave some leaves! Leaves tucked into garden beds and around plants can provide overwintering habitat for insects and other little garden residents.
But that doesn't mean every leaf needs to stay exactly where it lands.
A thick, wet layer of whole leaves can mat together and smother areas of your lawn, so move or mulch those. And if you're cleaning up foliage from plants that had disease problems this season, we wouldn't reuse that material around healthy plants.
So this fall, instead of looking at a yard full of leaves and thinking...
“Ugh. I have to clean all of THAT up.”
Try looking at it as your trees delivering free garden material right to your doorstep. 😂🍁
And considering what a bag of anything for the garden costs these days… FREE sounds pretty good!
What happens to the leaves at your house — rake them, mulch them, compost them, leave some... or all of the above?
