How big should the rug under a dining table be? Bigger than most people guess, because it isn't sized to the table. 🪑
It's sized to where the chairs end up when someone pushes back to stand.
📏 You want at least 24" of rug past the table edge on every side.
Any less and the back legs drop off the edge as someone gets up. The chair catches, the rug edge starts to curl, and over time it tends to become the spot people trip on.
The shortcut: add 4 feet to both of your table's measurements.
📏 84" × 42" table → 132" × 90" → a 9×12. An 8×10, the size that often gets called "dining size," comes up short at the ends. 📏 48" round table → 96" → an 8-foot round. Round tables work the same way, just off the diameter.
And if the rug's already down, here's the thirty-second check: sit in a chair, push back like you're getting up, and look at the back legs. All four still on the rug? That's the whole test.
