When we talk about climate solutions, the conversation often focuses on new technologies. But what if some of our most powerful solutions are already growing all around us?

Join Leaf & Limb for a behind-the-scenes tour of our facility, where we'll explore practical ways to address climate change, restore ecosystems, and support biodiversity.

We'll walk through our grove where we grow thousands of saplings from seed, and see examples of a Pocket Forest and a Piedmont Prairie. Along the way, we'll explore how healthy soil, native plants, and trees can help cool our communities, capture carbon, manage stormwater, and help heal Earth.

Basil will also share insights from From Wasteland to Wonder, exploring easy ways we can help heal Earth in the sub/urban landscape.

Lunch will be provided.

What do you do when the tree you want to plant isn’t available anywhere?

Roger Conner is Superintendent of Tree Management for Duke’s Landscape Services unit of Facilities Management. Last year he ran into exactly that problem: he wanted to plant uncommon species on campus, but there was no way to get them.

So he’s growing them himself. Roger followed Project Pando’s model and built an air pruning box. Now he works with students to collect seeds from trees already growing on campus, and once those seeds become saplings, they go back into the ground at Duke.

Basil stopped by earlier this week to see how it’s going.

Thanks for showing us around, Roger. Seeing a campus this size grow its own trees is pretty incredible!

Same idea as a Pocket Forest, built entirely from shrubs. Pack them in close, and you get a living privacy screen that birds and butterflies treat as a grocery store. This Native Privacy Thicket includes blueberry, elderberry, beautyberry, and a wax myrtle that has grown taller than any we've ever seen.

Plant a Thicket, not a hedge.

In winter, this is a dump truck. In summer, it becomes one of our most important vehicles. Martin shows the tank, reel, and hose rigged in the bed, then gives a young wax myrtle a deep, slow drink.

After a summer of serious drought, watering is what carries newly planted trees and shrubs through. Luke, our in-house mechanic and maker, built this rig so one truck can do both jobs, and nothing sits idle.

A silver-spotted skipper working a stand of goldenrod. Goldenrod gets blamed for allergies it has nothing to do with, and meanwhile it's feeding half the insects in the field during the leanest weeks of the year. One native flower to plant, not skip.

Want to make sure your soil is healthy? Before you send soil off to a lab, try this. Basil pushes a screwdriver into the ground to see what happens.

If it slides in easily, your soil has structure and air. If it stops short, compaction is your real problem, and no bag of fertilizer will fix that.

Hand saw or pole saw? The right choice depends on where the cut is and how much pruning is needed. John walks through what lives in our trucks and when each one comes out.

We've all seen it. That long line of "Green Giant" arborvitae running down a property line, and then all of a sudden: a break in the line. Two or three of the plants have died, and what should have been a continuous expanse of green is now a gap-toothed grin staring back at the neighbors.

A Privacy Thicket is made up of many species, so a problem takes out one plant instead of the whole screen. It also feeds birds and butterflies while it blocks the view.

Maintenance? Just a single annual pruning that takes about twenty minutes.

A pole lopper reaches higher than you'd expect and cuts larger branches than you'd guess. John shows how our crews use one to work well up into the canopy with both feet on the ground.
